Betreff: [ezproxy] CAPTCHA with ezproxy?

Dear Colleagues,

Because of the problems with the ezproxy.uls file having to be cleared after each restart and potentially allowing users to engage in excessive downloading Swinburne is investigating the use of CAPTCHA as an extra security measure.

Are any of you using CAPTCHA with ezproxy?
If yes, have you any advice on how we might need to set CAPTCHA up to work with ezproxy?
Are you aware of any potential problems with using ezproxy with CAPTCHA?

Thank you,

Regards,
Laura

Like Christian, I also want more info on these problems (apologies if I missed earlier posts)...

As for how to implement CAPTCHA, look at External Script Authentication < http://oclc.org/support/services/ezproxy/documentation/usr/external.en.html>.

Hi Christian,
We need to clear the uls file after each restart because we have noticed that a user is consistently suspended because she has the misfortune to be the first person listed in the ezproxy.uls file (not exceeding the limit).

Our experience has been:
090628x has reported 4-5 times that she has been suspended for excessive usage. She is always the first entry in the ezproxy.uls file. We removed her entry from the ezproxy.uls file only to have the next person 100010821 in the ezproxy.uls file get blocked immediately (they contacted us within 5 mins!). We followed advice we have found to clear the ezproxy.uls file but that allows the real suspended user clear access as well.
1. OCLC has not been able to duplicate the problem
2. That restarting Ezproxy is the cause

So our solution is to delete the uls file each time we restart.

Regards,
Laura

We had similar problems, but only when a "hard" restart of the service takes place. In our case starting and stopping the windows service. We updated tot he most recent EZProxy version and moved our regular "hard" service restart to Saturday 4 am, where no one uses ezproxy, and the issue dissapeared.
