Getting random pthread errors

We've got two instances of EZproxy running on a virtual RHEL/Apache server and from time to time we get the dreaded "pthread_create failed 11 for Translate" error that hangs our proxy server until it's reset.

The server's been allocated 2Gb RAM and there's no recognizable pattern to when it happens. Because our EZproxy servers run on Linux, we've configured inotify to watch the message log and execute a Bash script every time it changes. The script looks at the most recent lines, and if it detects the pthread error it stops and restarts the server, then emails me the most recent lines of the message log.

It's an acceptable band-aid for now, but we're still trying to assess what makes this error happen. Any thoughts?
