Discussion:
Mac / Apple user warning screen: "Proxy Authentication Required" old IP... how to clear?

Hi all
Here is a new one for us.
We have a remote Mac user getting a system popup "Proxy Authentication Required" "Authentication for http proxy" with a reference to
the IP address of another college in the dialog box. (a familiar IP that they used to work from, but not us).
It looks to me like a client firewall setting or a browser configuration (Firefox)
that needs to be cleared or reset. Am I on the right track? Any Mac experts out there?

TIA

Charles,
If this is only in FF, look to see if they had installed Zotero as a plug-in. It has the ability to store proxy settings to route citations through a specified proxy server.

I would guess it has nothing do with EzProxy and just doesn't happen that at some point they worked for some organization require they use a more run of the mill proxy?

Did this Mac used to be a work laptop?

Or it might be they used some plugin that will use

I'd get their specific version of the OS, then just google that message + that mac version. Then follow the steps to remove the http proxy.

Dear Charles,

One of the ways we used to do proxying was to have the user download a proxy.pac file and set it up in their browser settings. If the user still has that set up, it would show the old proxy pac settings.

So, yes, I'd try the firefox Tools/Options/Advanced/connection settings to see if they are using a proxy.

Just Guessing,

That sounds very much like the previous institution used a browser proxy config to handle their proxying, and so the browser is still trying to go through the other institution's proxy. The specific browser in use is a more relevant issue than the fact that it's a Mac.
