Discussion:
location of your ezproxy server

Dear EZProxy List,
I don't know if this has been asked before so please bear with me. I would
like to know exactly where you have your ezproxy server located. All
details that can be shared would be greatly appreciated. For example, is it
in a particular office with special security conditions? Is it located on a
lower level or upper level floor? Who is in charge of the ezproxy, library
personnel, IT personnel, or both? Is it located inside the library or in
another building? And finally where do you think would be the truly ideal
location for the ezproxy server, in the library or elsewhere?

Thanks for your help.

Our EZProxy server is a dedicated Virtual Machine that is managed by central IT. Our central IT has a managed VM service through which we can essentially rent a VM, have them handle all the datacenter issues, OS management, monitoring, and security. We just have to manage EZproxy itself.

Given the Big Fat Target (tm) I have found EZProxy to be from a security perspective, I'd say the idea location would be in a secure datacenter. It should be managed, monitored, and secured by a professional sysadmin. If you don't have an amenable IT department that can provide that, an outsourced managed server cloud vendor or hosting EZProxy with OCLC would probably be the next best choice.

IT has our server locked up in a server room in a campus building. I know which building, but not where the server room is. IT is in charge of the box, updating Windows and other software. I’m in charge of the config files, authentication etc.

EZproxy is running on virtual machines located somewhere on our institutional IT infrastructure in an IT dedicated building managed by IT staff.

Hi Chris,

We almost have the same setup. Difference is I run 3 virtual EZproxy behind an F5 appliance that takes care of SSL certificate (no heartbleed issue), SSO and load balancing.

Our EZProxy is a virtual machine on our hyper-v cluster. We have our own dedicated server room. The EZProxy server is hosted and managed by the library IT.

On a dedicated VM in our server room. The host machine has a failover

Our server is virtualized as part of the campus virtual server pool. Physically it resides in a basement with the other campus servers. We have an automatic fall over to backup servers a few miles away.

I am the server administrator for our virtual server/EZProxy instance. The campus Network Administrator has enough knowledge to act as a backup for me. We are happy with our current setup. WE have access to the server room, due to other servers that we have located there.
