Discussion:
Chrome "No data received"

Hello all,

We are getting some users reporting that they see the following error when they hit one of our proxy-prefixed URLs using Google Chrome:

| "No data received"

I can't see anything in our EZproxy logs; as far as I can tell the user is not even getting as far as authenticating.

I can see from Googling that this is a sort-of-known Google Chrome problem, but I couldn't find a clear explanation or solution.

Has anyone else faced this problem with EZproxy-ed resources?

Many thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul - we haven't seen this. What service is it? We might also subscribe to it, and can test it via Google to see if we get a similar result.

Hi Stephen.

It appears not to be specific to a resource. For the record, the URL that caused the problem with the last user who reported it here was:

Hello Paul,

Not had any reports here. I just gave a couple of resources a go with Chrome. Seem okay (on campus, with auth forced). The only issue I can think of recently is the download functionality not working at ScienceDirect since Quosa was dropped. Haven't cracked that yet.

Kind regards,

Hi Paul - it works OK for me, and there seems to be a lot of generic stuff on the web about this problem. Can you replicate the problem yourself in Chrome? Have you tried running the "Live http headers" Chrome extension to see if this sheds any light on what is happening?

Thanks all.

Yes, when the users switch to an alternative browser (either IE or Firefox) the problem disappears, so it seems to be specific to Chrome.

Haven't been able to reproduce the issue locally (yet). It is only certain users; I suspect it is a firewall or specific network issue for individual users.

Subject: [ezproxy] Chrome "No data received"

Paul

Paul,
Closest I've had reported appears to be resolved by going to settings, searching cookies, selecting Content Settings and then "All cookies and site data." With that open, search your proxy (e.g., for us, it would be libproxy.usc.edu) and remove all. See if that resolves the problem.

Hi Stephen.

It appears not to be specific to a resource. For the record, the URL that caused the problem with the last user who reported it here was:

http://{our_ezproxy_domain}/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=a9h&AN=11477253&site=ehost-live<http://%7bour_ezproxy_domain%7d/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=a9h&AN=11477253&site=ehost-live>

Hi Paul - we haven't seen this. What service is it? We might also subscribe to it, and can test it via Google to see if we get a similar result.

We are just getting ready to switch to ezproxy and we've seen this happen with just about all resources when patrons use chrome and the back arrow button. We just moved our test server to the the most recent ezproxy update. Early testing is encouraging that it solved the chrome back button issue.

Hi all.

Thanks for all the suggestions as to the cause of this one. We've still not been able to find an easy solution that the user can follow, other than to temporarily switch to using another browser.

Thanks again,

Paul
